Why Surreal chose Kinde for their Next.js server components architecture

We envision Kinde becoming the preferred authentication solution for web developers.

Surreal is a comprehensive live entertainment productivity platform designed for agencies, venues, venue groups, and entertainers. The platform offers a suite of features including cross-venue scheduling, automated invoicing, promotion tools, and instant payments for entertainers.

In our search for an authentication provider, we prioritized three key factors: robust support for Next.js App Router, a thriving community, and GDPR compliance. Kinde distinguished itself with its server-oriented approach, offering seamless integration with Next.js Server Components and middleware.

Migration to the Kinde platform took a little under three weeks. The ability to get the authentication state on the server drastically simplified our auth implementation and we were also able to add new social login functionality for Google and Apple as a bonus.

Throughout the migration process, we utilized Kinde’s AI support tool and engaged with their Slack and Discord communities to address any challenges. We interacted with several Kinde team members along the way; everyone seemed to be a great human being and willing to help.

After we migrated, Ross (Kinde’s CEO) asked for a feedback meeting. There were three Kinde team members on the call asking for any pain points we experienced. We can already see the efforts being made to alleviate those, which makes us feel that the Kinde team really cares about the DX they provide.

Kinde’s server-centric approach has proven ideal for our Next.js Server Components architecture, increasing our team’s developer productivity.
